Dive into Sustainability: What is Recycled Polyester (rPET) Fabric?

Hey there, ocean-lovers! If you're passionate about cleaning up our planet and protecting marine ecosystems, this one's for you!  In today's blog, we're diving deeper into the world of sustainability and exploring one of the ways The Lake Shark is helping to make a difference - with our use of Recycled Polyester (rPET) fabric.

Polyester has long been used in swimwear and activewear because it is durable, comfortable, dries quickly, and is resistant to harmful UV from the sun.  Those features are great but unfortunately it comes at a cost to the environment to create the traditional material.

That's where innovative Recycled Polyester (rPET) comes in Let's break down the details:

  • Recycled polyester, also known as rPET, is a sustainable alternative to traditional polyester fabric.  It has all the good features of traditional polyester, but it is actually made from recycled plastic bottles! Yep, you heard that right – those plastic bottles from beach clean-ups and home recycling efforts can be repurposed and transformed into high-quality, soft, stylish and eco-friendly fabric!
  • How?  The process of creating rPET starts with collecting and sorting used plastic bottles. These bottles are carefully cleaned, shredded into small pieces, and melted down to form a liquid polymer. Then the polymer is spun into fibers and woven into fabric.
The end result is a clean, durable, and SOFT performance fabric that's not only stylish but also has a positive impact on the environment!  By recycling plastic bottles into fabric, we're:
  • Helping to clean up our planet
  • Reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans and landfills.
  • Conserving valuable resources
  • Reducing our carbon footprint
  • Adding an extra layer of eco-conscious goodness to your underwater explorations!

Using recycled materials is a more costly and time-consuming process, but at The Lake Shark we believe it is worth it to help keep plastics that have already been created from ending up in landfills or the sea.  We want you to look good AND feel good about helping to contribute a positive impact for the planet!

The Lake Shark eco-friendly recycled rPET fabric is used in Crop Top Rash Guards and Premium Leggings and available in plus sizes for scuba divers, surfers, paddle boarders and makes a great giftCheckout some of our latest products made with eco-friendly Recycled Polyester rPET fabric:
